Who may participate in The Metroplex Select Football League.?

Any child between the age of 4 to 12.

What do teams in the league charge to play football?

Fees vary depending on which league team you select in your area. Generally fees range between $125 and $250 per season.

Do all teams offer a scholarship program for families under financial hardship?

Yes. Each team has allocate a small pool a funds used to cover the player registration fee to those families in financial hardship. These scholarships are awarded by the board on a case by case basis to those families who request it in writing. Players who receive these scholarships must still fully participate in the team fundraiser programs.

4.

How is a player assigned to a team?

A football player may register for any Metroplex Select member team they want to play on. As long as the roster is not considered full, players are taken on a first come first serve basis.

Are teams aged based or grade based?

Teams are based on age, however we do extended programs for middle school players to participate.

  • Flag – ages 6 & under - typically k-k2 grade players
  • Sophomores - ages 7/8 - typically 2nd and 3rd grade players
  • Juniors - ages 9/10 - typically 4th and 5th grade players
  • Seniors - ages 11-12 - typically 6th and 7th grade players

What are the weight limits? Will my larger son need to play up with older players?

Metroplex Select has no weight limit to participate in the league but we do place a weight limit to carry the football.

  • Flag – ages 6 & 75lbs to carry the football
  • Sophomores - ages 7/8 - 100lbs to carry the football
  • Juniors - ages 9/10 - 120lbs to carry the football
  • Seniors - ages 11-12 - 140lbs to carry the football

Are there tryouts to make a team?

Although Metroplex Select member teams reserve the right to provide tryouts, they generally does not require them. There is however a limit to the number of players allowed on a team roster. Positions are assigned at the discretion of the coaches and “not parents”. Players are assigned positions which best suit their ability and the needs of the team.

How many players are allowed on a team?

The maximum number of players allowed on a team is 25. In order to allow better play time opportunities, Metroplex Select limits team size 25 at the older divisions, and to 20 at the younger flag divisions.

Do all players play? Is there a minimum participation rule?

There is no minimum participation. How much players participate is at the sole discretion of coaches.

10.

When does practice begin? How long does the season last?

Practices can officially begin no June 1st. Some teams may meet informally and do spring conditioning, or attend a mini-camp, but participation is not mandatory. Games begin in August, and finish around the first week of November.

Does my son need a physical examination prior to participating?

Metroplex Select encourages players to receive a medical physical examination annually prior to participation, but we do not mandate or track it. The decision if a player is healthy enough to play is up to the parent or legal guardian who registers the player.

Who and where do teams play their games?

All games at played at either at a home or visiting team field. Check with the team in your area for more information.

Where do teams practice?

All teams practice at a field in their local area. To learn more please check with the team you are interested in joining.

What is the time commitment for players and parents?

Compared to most other youth sports, organized football requires an entire team to perform as a single unit. There are generally up to 4 hours of practice per week… usually twice a week from 6pm-8pm.

Can I also play for my Middle School Team?

Absolutely! Metroplex Select fully supports school programs, including music, band, as well as football.

Do Metroplex Select teams compete in post season bowl games?

Yes. All teams will qualify for a post season Bowl game depending how they finish in the playoffs.

Do I need to provide my own football equipment?

Most teams but not all provide equipment for their players. We recommend that you check with the team you are interested in joining to make sure whether they provide equipment.

18.

What do teams provide with the registration fee and what do I still need to purchase?

The registration fee pays for the use of quality helmets, chin strap, shoulder pad, practice and game pants, with pad sets, game uniforms, belt, practice jersey and a standard colored mouthpiece. In any case, players will receive the highest quality equipment available. Each player is responsible for providing football shoes, socks, supporter, t-shirts (worn under the shoulder pads) and any optional padding they wish to equip themselves with (sweatbands, elbow pads, forearm pads, etc.) Football shoe cleats must be rubber molded cleats without any metal or sharp plastic edges.

What kind of football shoes should I get?

We recommend a molded shoe that is comfortable to your child. Many brands fit differently so we also recommend trying out a few cleats before making a selection.

When and where is equipment distributed?

Equipment is generally distributed during the last week of June. An email will be sent to all registered players with details.
